Woman Eating Grapes / Empty Pockets (Roulette Wheel), 2009

Pictures of "Woman Eating Grapes" and "Empty Pockets" are ubiquitous in image culture due to the ease of which they can be performed or visualized. For his installation at the Clockwork Gallery, Holmberg staged a photo shoot of a woman eating grapes and [his own] empty pockets. These photographs are placed on opposing sides of the spinning advertising space, and casino advertisements featuring a roulette wheel occupy the other two positions . "Woman Eating Grapes" and "Empty Pockets" as conflicting symbols of luxury and impoverishment are emphasized by their serendipitous proximity to the image of a roulette wheel.
